Asmik Grigorian
Lithuanian soprano; sang the title role in the Salzburg Festival's 'Salome' and works across Strauss, Puccini and Janáček
About Asmik Grigorian
Character comes first in my preparation — I build a role from its silences and contradictions, then let the voice follow where the drama already went. Salzburg's 'Salome' was the clearest example: a part that only works if you are willing to be uncomfortable on stage. I grew up backstage in Vilnius, so opera has never felt like a museum to me. Conversations about role study or audition nerves are welcome.
