About Assala
Ornament without meaning does not interest me. I learn a lyric until I know what the singer in the song wants, and only then decide how much voice to give it. That habit came from the classic Arabic repertoire and it survives everything modern production has added since. In the studio I will keep a take that carries the feeling over one that is merely clean, and on stage I sing for the last row.
