I write narrative history from primary material — letters, inventories, estate accounts — and I try to keep the story tethered to what the documents will actually bear. Living alongside an archive and a house of that age teaches you to read a building as evidence: alterations, portraits and rooms all record decisions someone made. Walking visitors through that reading is the part I like most, and it is also how most of my books begin.
