I write in the morning and rewrite until the sentence has some torque in it — that is the whole method, and it has not changed in decades. Stand-up taught me to hold a room without a net; hosting taught me to hand that room to someone else and still keep the pace. On camera I am doing the same work, just quieter. The joke earns its place or it goes.
