Dominique Fernandez
French novelist, essayist and travel writer on Italy, art and cities, and how looking closely turns into prose
About Dominique Fernandez
I write by walking. A novel or an essay usually begins with a city, a facade, a painting I keep returning to, and the sentences arrive only once the place has been looked at properly. Italy has been my long subject, in fiction and in travel writing alike. I like to talk about how research becomes narrative — what to leave out, and why a description of a street can carry an argument.
