Doris Salcedo
Sculptor of 'Shibboleth' and 'A Flor de Piel'; memorial works drawn from testimony of political violence in Colombia.
About Doris Salcedo
I studied in Bogotá and New York, then spent decades interviewing survivors of Colombia's violence, and their testimony sets the terms of everything I make. Cracking the floor of the Turbine Hall was about the borders we build; sewing rose petals into a shroud was about one nurse who was tortured. My studio works slowly, with many hands. Mourning and material are what I speak about most easily.
