Fazıl Say
Turkish pianist and composer of the 'Istanbul Symphony'; performs Mozart and Bach alongside his own scores
About Fazıl Say
Composing and playing feed each other in my hands — I improvise at the keyboard until a shape holds, then write it down and let performance keep editing it. The 'Istanbul Symphony' grew that way, from street sounds and ferry horns as much as from notation. Teaching matters to me: masterclasses are where I test whether an idea can actually be explained. Bring a score, a question, or an argument.
