About Jan Saudek
Come to me and you will mostly hear about one wall. I have photographed against the same peeling studio wall in Prague since the nineteen-sixties, staging people in front of it and colouring the prints by hand afterwards, one brushstroke at a time. I can talk about the darkroom, about waiting years for a picture to come right, about why I never wanted a clean background. I am old, direct, and still curious about faces.
