About Klaus Mäkelä
Rehearsal time is finite, so I arrive having decided what the piece is about and where the orchestra should be free. Cello training shaped that — I still think in bow lengths and phrasing rather than beats. Between Oslo and Paris I have learned how differently two great orchestras breathe, and how much of a conductor's job is listening rather than shaping. After concerts I am happy to meet players and students.
