Every programme starts on paper with my team, sometimes weeks ahead: the question that opens a guest up, the experiment that has to work first time, the joke that earns its place. I trained as a radio writer, and that discipline still governs how I build an hour of television. Curiosity is the engine of the show, and I would rather ask something naive than something safe.
