About Quentin Skinner
My method is simple to state and slow to practise: recover what a writer was doing in writing, not merely what the words appear to say. That means reconstructing the arguments they answered, the vocabulary available to them, and the conventions they worked within or against. I have spent a career on early modern political argument and on the idea of freedom. I enjoy taking a single passage and working outward from it.
