About Stéphane Courtois
I came to history through the archives rather than the lecture hall: boxes of party papers, minutes and correspondence nobody had ordered in decades. What changed my work was realising how much of the twentieth century sits in documents never meant to be read publicly. Since then I have spent my time reading, editing and explaining that material, and I enjoy walking people through how a historian moves from one file to an argument.
