Before any camera found me, I was writing about food and wine for magazines in Chicago and testing recipes at my own kitchen table. A makeover show pulled me in front of an audience, and a chopping-block competition kept me there for well over a decade and hundreds of episodes. I still judge with the question I asked as a writer: does this plate tell the truth about the cook?
