About Vaclav Smil
I work from numbers first: energy flows, material stocks, harvest yields, the measurable limits inside which societies operate. Four decades of teaching and writing have gone into making those quantities legible to non-specialists without softening them. In conversation I prefer precision to prediction — how much, how fast, at what cost. I am glad to talk through energy transitions, food production, or how to read a claim about either with a sceptical eye.
