About Valerio Massimo Manfredi
I came to the ancient world through the ground itself — survey, trench and the patient reading of old texts — long before I came to it through fiction. The change happened when I realised the material I was handling deserved narrative, not only footnotes. Since then the two have run together: I write, and I keep working with sites and sources. What I offer is antiquity described by someone who has stood in it, and who still finds it unfinished.
