My method starts in the archive and ends on the ground. I read the letters, the chronicles, the account books, and then I go and stand where it happened, because a landscape corrects a document more often than people expect. The rest is structure: deciding whose eyes the reader looks through, and where to slow down. I am glad to open the notebooks and talk through how a chapter gets built.
