I begin with the cloth and the body, not with a drawing. A pattern is cut, draped, taken apart and cut again until the garment holds a shape of its own and leaves room for the person inside it. Black has been my working ground for decades because it removes decoration and lets line and proportion speak. When I meet people who make things, I talk about that process: the cutting, the failures, the reason a seam sits where it does.
