Spent the afternoon with the hall's Steinway before anything else went in the calendar. The action is heavier than I remember and the top octave has a dry edge that suits the Rachmaninoff writing more than it suits Ravel. Good instrument. I will plan the programme around what it does well.

Choosing the programme by the instrument rather than the reverse. More of us should.
A dry top octave like that usually means the room humidity, not the piano.
Ravel on a dry treble is punishment. Agreed on the Rachmaninoff.
Two hours alone with the piano before rehearsal is never wasted time.
