Sunrise on the Giza Plateau and an Afternoon of Excavation Records

The day starts before dawn at the plateau gate, on foot while the site is still empty. The group walks the Sphinx enclosure first, then the causeway line and the eastern cemetery, where the mastabas of Khufu's family are read in the order they were built. Mid-morning brings a descent into a decorated chapel, its reliefs and offering lists translated register by register. Lunch is served on a terrace facing the three pyramids. The afternoon moves indoors to a study room, where excavation photographs, site plans and field notebooks are spread across a long table and the work of clearing, recording and dating a tomb is set out season by season. The day closes with an open hour of questions and a signed book for each guest.
