Superflat Studio Day at Kaikai Kiki: Line, Flat Colour and Print

Guests arrive at the studio's production building outside central Tokyo and are given tea before a walk through the painting floor, where large canvases sit at different stages of completion. The Superflat method is then set out in sequence — outline drawn, flat colour filled, layer on layer with no shading and no illusion of depth — along with how the work is divided between assistants. Guests take a drawing table and build a character of their own, carrying it from line to flat colour with corrections along the way. The afternoon moves to the print room, where each guest pulls a silkscreen by hand under supervision. The day closes over dinner with a conversation about running a studio as a business: editions, collaborations, and moving between painting, sculpture and objects.
